From: Neil Gordon

Dear Friend,

I don't know you. I can't pretend to know what's going on in your interior design business, how well you're doing or what your overall professional philosophy is. Your work ethic and your long term goals and strategies are yours and yours alone.

But I'm going to make a bold statement here anyway. I think I know something about your brain.

If you're an interior designer or decorator, then chances are you're a right-brain thinker. You're highly creative, abstract and thoughtful. This is a good thing, believe me.

Unfortunately, right-brain thinkers tend to have trouble with numbers, analyzing business data, statistics and forecasting. So while your creativity is continually blossoming, your number-crunching business side remains stagnant.

Today's interior design industry is more competitive and cut-throat than ever. The ones who recognize this and are able to take off the rose colored glasses long enough to see that their business may need some help with the nuts and bolts growth and planning phase, and can see some fundamental flaws in the way their business is currently being run, are the ones who will ultimately excel much faster and be at a consistently higher level of growth than those who don't.

Now don't get me wrong. There's nothing bad about those rose-colored glasses. Positive thinking is a good thing, and certainly better than negative. But when it clouds our judgment about the things that might be counterproductive to our business model and overall plan, we tend to get bogged down in denial and hope for the best, despite the storms raging all around us.

So hear me out for a few moments, because once we shine the light of truth on what might be holding your interior design business back from reaching its fullest potential, then and only then can we fix what's wrong and have something to feel genuinely positive about: a successful business!

Do You See Yourself in Any of These 6 Fatal Flaws?

The way I see it, through my years of experience in the industry both as a Certified Master Coach and a renowned expert in the design industry (more about me in a minute), I've identified 6 Fatal Flaws in business that can be the death knell for any well-intentioned interior designer.

Now I'm not writing these for me. I know them and live by them. I'm placing them on this website for you to learn from. Hopefully you'll have enough insight into your own ways of doing business, and enough honesty about yourself, to see yourself in one, two, all six or any combination of these Fatal Flaws. It's important that you read these carefully so you'll know what to correct and how I can help you do it with laser precision:

Fatal Flaw #1: No Strategic Vision

Imagine that 5 years from now you and I are sitting in a coffee shop. You have just accomplished all of your business goals and are sitting back, basking in the fruits of your labor. You're explaining to me with great enthusiasm how you were able to make your vision a reality.

What would it take for this scenario to occur if you were to start working on this strategic vision today? What is your 5-year vision for your company? Do you have one? Great leaders have a big vision. Without it you are a ship sailing with no compass, going wherever the wind takes you.

Fatal Flaw #2: Uncooperative Teamwork

Every day you try so hard to get your specific message and long term vision across to your team members, whether they be your employees, your contractors, your suppliers or your other vendors. Everyone must be in sync. Without this synergy it's easy to veer off course while putting out daily fires, resolving conflicts and clarifying assignments.

Fatal Flaw #3: Haphazard Marketing

This is one of the most common of all the Fatal Flaws. In your zeal to grow your business and generate quick leads you go for the deceivingly easy strike: advertising. You can be drawn in by the persuasive and talented advertising sales people with urgent special offers and empty promises of effectiveness, only to find that instead of leads, you're separated from your money and your resources. Or, best case, is that you have some leads but the cost per lead was exorbitant.

Marketing takes careful planning, budgeting, tracking and forecasting. It involves determining your unique sales proposition, finding and maximizing your niche and acting based on the true identity of your company. Anything less is haphazard.

Fatal Flaw #4: Amateur Selling

How are you selling your services? Do you have a plan, an outline, any kind of system in place? Are you consistently selling based on your price or your value, and do you know which practice is better? Has your sales team been trained properly? Can they confidently answer any question and address any concern thrown at them?

Your answers to these questions will tell you a great deal about whether this Fatal Flaw is in your own backyard.

Fatal Flaw #5: Faulty Client Fulfillment

Congratulations! You've received a deposit and the new client is yours. Now what? Whether you want to believe this or not, you're walking a tightrope here. Client expectations are almost always exceptionally high. They're paying you a lot of money and expect you to come through for them. Big time. They are expecting to be absolutely thrilled, and anything short of that will result in lackluster word of mouth.

So you need to be flawless in this area. You need to create a system, and not just any system, one that's focused squarely on the client's desires and your ability to fulfill them efficiently and beyond reproach.

Fatal Flaw #6: Poor Negotiation Skills

If you understand the importance of value-based selling then negotiation takes care of itself. If you don't, then you'll constantly be compromising your price structure to land clients, especially in a slow cash-flow month.

Decorating is an emotion-based decision for prospective clients. You should always keep that in mind when negotiating and you'll invariably come out on the winning side of the table. And always be prepared to walk away from a negotiation. This skill will land you more clients and your ideal rate more often than not.

OK it's time for a gut-check…

Did you see yourself in any of these 6 Fatal Flaws? If you did, don't panic, because I'm here to help. The first step in correcting your faulty business model is to recognize the existence of a problem. Then and only then can you take the necessary steps to correct it.

Just your ability to see these flaws in the context of your own interior design business puts you in a very elite group of business owners. It's the successful entrepreneurs who are pro-active enough to be willing to invite experts into their inner circle so they can become better at what they do.

Introducing One-to-One Coaching from Neil Gordon

When you enroll in my One-to-One Coaching program we'll roll up our sleeves and immediately get to work on identifying and correcting any or all of the 6 Fatal Flaws that are holding your business back from achieving the greatness it deserves.

Through a series of information-packed and action-oriented web conferencing, phone and email consultations, you'll get:

A larger long term client base as a result of putting a cohesive marketing plan into action

Better cash flow as a result of improved negotiation skills and value oriented offerings

A measurable improvement in the effectiveness of your team of employees, contractors and suppliers as a result of better teamwork skills

Increased confidence and overall self-assuredness as a result of having successfully completed a strategic vision for your company

Clients who aren't just satisfied, but become cheerleaders for you, spreading the word about your expertise, value and quality to anyone who will listen

Here's How the One-to-One Coaching Process Works

Once you give me the green light, we'll tackle the 6 Fatal Flaws one by one. Even if you feel you're doing OK in some areas, we'll fine tune your skills so they're the absolute best they can be.

Session 1: The Leadership Coach
This first area of business development is all about you. We'll examine your attitudes, your beliefs and how they are applied to the strengths and weaknesses of your business. Your ability to harness your strengths and implement your renewed vision will all rise to the surface in this eye opening module.

Warning: if you are ultra-sensitive then this first module may scare you off, and you may not be ready for this program. But if you have what it takes to honestly analyze yourself with the help of a seasoned expert who knows how to make businesses succeed big, then this is just right for you.

Session 2: The Team Coach
All businesses—from a one-person company to a large organization—need to work within a team concept. How will you manage, coach, and lead your team? How can you become an effective leader, even if you are a one-person operation? In this module, you will learn how to draft a team chart, create vendor agreements, and employ strategic business systems.

Session 3: The Marketing Coach
Lead generation is critical to the survival and growth of your business. Together you and I will develop a way to have a constant flow of new leads. We'll examine the current state of your lead generation and, through careful analysis, you will determine precisely who your target market is (it may surprise you). Plus, since all successful businesses rely on referrals, you'll create a referral marketing system and an agenda letter system.

Session 4: The Sales Coach
Have you established a positioning statement? Do you serve a particular niche? Have you implemented a selling system for your designs? By the end of this module you will be able to answer a resounding “Yes!” to all of those questions. You'll also develop a client management system so you can keep in constant contact with your clients, and we'll implement ways to boost both client acquisition and retention.

Session 5: The Satisfaction Coach
Keeping your promises is the best way to grow your business and to encourage referrals. A flawless client fulfillment system is critical to delivering on your promises to your clients. In this module we will examine how you get things done and encourage setting up the various systems. Along with this, we will work on making sure that you are exceeding your client's expectations, each and every time, with great satisfaction staging ideas.

Session 6: The Negotiation Coach
The money you save in this session alone will pay for this coaching program many times over. In this session you'll begin to understand what happens during the negotiation or decision-making phase of the selling process. Who is the decision maker? How do you know if you can trust what your client says? You will become a more effective negotiator and develop a solid pricing and estimating strategy and much more.

Let's be perfectly honest at this point. You've come this far because you realize that you may need some help. Your creativity comes at a cost. Your analytical, business acumen can suffer. It's the whole left-brain vs. right-brain battle coming into play here.

Here's where I come in. With One-to-One Coaching you and I will tackle your business head on, fix what needs to be fixed, and improve what is currently running well.

Now I could be wrong here, but I doubt that you went to the lengths you did, make the sacrifices and work so hard to start your interior design business just so you could stop short of total and complete success—when you are really so very close!

Together, you and I will get your business to the level of greatness it deserves.

Your investment in this is not 5 figures, as by all rights it should be. Getting the business help from an expert, someone who's been in the design field for 14 years, served on the editorial board of Window Fashion Magazine, been interviewed about my business techniques by national magazines and was featured as the cover story in Draperies & Window Coverings Magazine.

I didn't want to tell you all this until the end because you may think my prices for coaching would be out of the ballpark.

Fortunately, that's not the case. My motivation here is to help you achieve a great business without investing your life savings. That's why your investment in this program is a mere $1,895. You can even break it up into 3 easy monthly installments of $700.

The acquisition of a single client as a result of this coaching will pay for what you learn.

Here's a rundown of what you get
when you bring me on board:

You receive the 6 modules of One-to-One Coaching as outlined above

"Neil, You are one of the most talented and down-to-earth coach/consultants I have ever met (and I've been subjected to a lot of them during a “past life” in my career). How you find the time and muster the energy to do everything you do, I cannot fathom. Everyone who attended your sessions at the conference will benefit from not only your counsel, but the many new ideas you've pioneered, and the tools you've developed. "You might be interested to know that I have been practicing the Leadership Coach and Strategic Vision. Since it finally materialized, the document, kind of, took over and my actions towards my business became more structured and I myself more disciplined. Your assertiveness, confidence and persistency helped me realize what would be important for my particular situation. Your quick but thoughtful comments gave me a feeling of urgency. I feel that after putting so much thought into the Leadership Coach, it has become my guide in everything I do in my business every day. To be honest, I tried to change the direction a couple of times. The surprising thing was that my plan pulled me back as if it was a material thing. I think that anyone who chooses to work with you as a coach will benefit from your generosity and true talent."

Thank you,
Marina Goldberg

(word of mouth marketing), Neil has boosted word of mouth to a high art with his ideas on home staging, designer marketing and much more.
